iPhone 14 and “Apple Glass” probably with Wi-Fi 6E
With the iPhone 14, which should appear next year, Apple could push the spread of the new WLAN standard. A current one report According to the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Californian company is planning to equip the next generation of its own smartphones with support for Wi-Fi 6E. Apple’s VR headset, which according to recent rumors is due to be presented in the near future (see ), is said to have the new wireless network standard on board. However, Kuo expects the glasses known as “Apple Glass” to be presented in the fourth quarter of next year, probably around the same time as the iPhone 14.
Certain components could become scarce
However, according to Kuo, Apple’s plans could still be thwarted by supply shortages or be affected by delays. The reason for this is the scarcity of certain components, which will probably continue for some time and may become worse, which are manufactured using a technique called “Low Temperature Cofired Ceramics” (LTCC). Due to their favorable high-frequency properties, these are used in various radio modules, including WLAN chips. Because of the expanded frequency spectrum and the larger number of channels, in the case of Wi-Fi 6E considerably more of these components are required than with previous wireless network standards. Kuo reckons that the iPhone 14’s support for Wi-Fi 6E will ensure that Apple’s main competitors will soon follow suit. In his opinion, the resulting increase in demand should lead to supply difficulties for LTCC components in the coming year.
