Carl Pei, founder and CEO of Nothing, tried out the Apple iPhone 14 Pro, and in the video embedded below with the Nothing Phone (1) (approx. 399 euros on Amazon) compared. The conclusion is as honest as it is predictable: If you want the best smartphone, especially in terms of the camera, you should go for the iPhone 14 Pro, but if you want the best device for 400 euros, you are better off with the Phone (1).
According to Carl Pei, Apple has far larger margins. An Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max costs in production around $501, the Nothing Phone (1) is said to cost around $360 to manufacture – this is where Apple takes advantage of the sheer volume of smartphones that are manufactured each quarter. In fact, Nothing should ultimately make a profit with the Phone (1) when retailer margins and logistics costs are factored in, which Carl Pei says isn’t a problem for a startup company.
The CEO of Nothing thinks the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island is “cool”, but hardly revolutionary. Carl Pei finds it all the more annoying that the design of the Nothing Phone (1) is often compared to the iPhone online, since there are hardly any similarities apart from the volume buttons. Although the CEO of Nothing likes the iPhone 14 Pro, the device is going back to Apple – Carl Pei sticks with the “more interesting” Nothing Phone (1).
