Iphone 14 | Power consumption of the iPhone 14: Apple users can breathe easy | apple iphone

Apple had refused for a long time, but with the two professional models of the iPhone 14, the manufacturer finally decided on a genuine always-on display. However, if you want to save energy, it is better to turn off the feature. But is that really true?

Apple

Many Android phones have long had a so-called Always-on display. Necessary information such as time, notifications and more always remain in the user’s field of vision. Apple, however, waited until the introduction of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both models have an improved ProMotion display whose refresh rate can be regulated to a power-saving 1 Hz.

iPhone 14 Pro (Max): How efficient is Apple’s always-on display in the end?

Nevertheless, such an efficient always-on display naturally consumes more power than a completely switched-off screen. So the tip used to be: If you don’t really need it, it’s better to switch off the always-on display. But how much electricity can really be saved in this way? The creators of the YouTube channel “PhoneBuff” wanted to know this and carried out a revealing test under laboratory conditions (source: PhoneBuff, YouTube).

A test device is used iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple’s top model with the largest always-on display. The behavior was examined with the always-on display switched on with and without a colorful wallpaper and, of course, with the screen completely switched off over a period of 24 hours. Comparable test conditions were also ensured. The iPhone, for example, was freshly set up and operated solely in flight mode, with no additional installed apps or a linked iCloud account. The ambient brightness was also adjusted so that the brightness of the displays does not change in the test and is therefore different.

The focus of the question? How much battery capacity would the iPhone 14 Pro Max still have in the end? How high would the different power consumption be? The result:

  • Display switched off: With the always-on display switched off, it was still there after 24 hours 100 percent battery capacityso the consumption was so low that it could not be determined at the end.
  • Always-on display with text only: With the always-on display switched on, but without a colorful wallpaper (text only) remained after 24 hours 84 percent of the original battery capacity.
  • Always-on display with colorful wallpaper: If the always-on display was used without restrictions with a colored background image, then it was still there after 24 hours 80 percent the battery capacity available.

Useful tip for the iPhone:

Always-on display in practice: switch on calmly

In summary: In extreme cases, the always-on display costs 20 percent of the battery capacity, the difference whether with or without colorful wallpaper is not particularly important. The battery saving tip, that Disable always-on displaytherefore has its justification, but there is a small catch.

In practice, the power consumption should be much lower due to the always-on display, because it is not really always on. In different situations this is simply deactivated again and again in order to save energy. For example, when the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is face down on the table, or even when it is in your pocket or purse, or connected to CarPlay in the car. In short: In contrast to laboratory operations, the Power consumption in practice much lower off and the always-on display can be used with a clear conscience.
