With the current iPhone 13 generation, Apple has dispensed with some features that would have been very practical and that have been available in Android phones for a long time. Therefore, here are the reasons to ditch the current iPhone 13 and to the iPhone 14 (all current rumours) to wait, which will be launched in September 2022. Also you can still confidently reach for the iPhone 12, as our comparison shows. What is particularly interesting is that the standard models will differ more than before from the Pro versions.
Shortly after the iPhone 13 release, the well-known leaker Jon Prosser renders of the iPhone 14 released, which show the upcoming Apple cell phone completely without a display notch at the top of the screen. Instead there is only one punch hole for the front camera, the sensors for the Face ID are hidden behind the display glass.

Some rumors are currently saying that Apple will at least iPhone 14 Pro actually the classic notch removed and instead on one Mixture of punch hole and pill shape the front camera sets, like that Expert Ross Young reports. The small circular recess should contain sensors for the Face ID and the selfie cam with other face recognition elements should be housed in the pill cutout. The standard models of the iPhone 14, on the other hand, should continue to come with a notch. It would probably be a little smaller again compared to the notch in the iPhone 13.
Jon Prosser’s rendering images not only show that the notch is supposed to disappear, but also that an iPhone with a completely new design could come in 2022. And that is partly reminiscent of an old Apple cell phone, we are talking about the iPhone 4. The metal frame of the two glass sides no longer closes at the edges, as is the case with the iPhone 12, but leaves a tiny gap as with the iPhone 4 too. Apple will probably use titanium instead of stainless steel for the frame.

The renderings, based on images and blueprints from its sources, show that the Apple logo is incorporated on the back under the glass and no longer directly on the surface. In addition to the notch on the front, the camera hump on the back should also almost completely disappear. The three lenses, the lidar sensor and the flash are almost seamless with the surface. And that would be a major improvement in design over previous iPhones.
The camera setup continues to protrude from the body, as new renders of the iPhone 14 Pro based on CAD files show. 0.7 millimeters further than the iPhone 13 Pro. This can be explained with the camera update that the next iPhone will receive.
The iPhone models will not only differ in the notch design, but also in the camera. The two Pro models in particular will become one significant leap in camera features and quality make. The iPhone Pro and Pro Max will probably be able to record videos in 8K, as is currently the case Samsung’s Galaxy S22 range.
Apple should also finally say goodbye to the 12-megapixel resolution in the Pro models and rely on 48 megapixels in the main camera with a larger image sensor, as among other things Macromors reports, which refer to analyst Jeff Pu. In general, however, it is possible that the cameras will continue to take photos with 12 megapixels by default. As with many Android devices, Apple could use an algorithm that creates a 12-megapixel image with more light information from the 48-megapixel raw data. In this way, four pixels become one pixel, which at 2.5 micrometers would be significantly larger than the 1.7 micrometer pixels of the iPhone 13. As usual, the two standard models iPhone 14 and 14 Max should have a 12-megapixel be equipped with a camera.
In addition, Apple is said to be installing a periscope camera for 10x optical zoom for the first time this year, with which iPhone users can finally take decent telephoto photos. A periscope camera can already be found in many Android phones from Huawei, Samsung and Oppo. However, Apple’s patent describes a slightly different technique, which we describe in more detail in this article.
Apple is primarily lagging behind the competition in terms of the refresh rate of its displays, which has now not only reached 120 Hertz and sometimes even 144 Hertz in the flagship range, while the iPhones up to the iPhone 13 only offered 60 Hertz. After all, the current Pro models are now based on 120 Hertz, the smaller standard versions look in the tube.
Rumors have long persisted that by 2022 all four iPhone models would have a 120 Hertz ProMotion display. This should be possible because Apple wanted to get LG on board as another supplier of LTPO OLED screens in addition to Samsung, as we explain in more detail here and how The Elec also reported. Thanks to LTPO technology, it is possible to vary the refresh rate and only call up the highest frequency when it is actually required – for example in games. If you read an e-book, for example, the rate automatically drops to 10 Hertz, for example.
Although Samsung and LG will produce displays for the iPhone 14, according to the latest rumours, however, only the Pro variants should again offer 120 Hertz. Among other things, the Chinese manufacturer BOE is also said to deliver displays, but BOE is only just expanding its production facilities in order to be able to produce more screens for Apple in 2023. It is likely that the iPhone 15 generation will then switch completely to 120 Hertz. In our opinion, this is almost an impertinence for the customers, but they even offer it 300 euro Android phones this high refresh rate, which makes smooth operation of the smartphone possible in practice.
Rumors persisted for a long time that Touch ID could also return with the iPhone 13 in the high-end sector – but this time not in the form of a physical button like the current one iPhone SE 3 (in review)but under the display glass, as you already see from Android phones like the current one Galaxy S22 (all information) know.
There is no question that a fingerprint sensor is practical as an unlocking method in addition to facial recognition via Face ID in times of the pandemic. That’s why it was hoped until the end that Apple would bring back the Touch ID. It remains to be seen whether we will see a touch ID on the display of the iPhone 14. Because here the rumors are currently not unanimous. While a few months ago there was talk of the Touch ID coming, at the moment people are talking more about that Apple could probably not bring them until 2023.
Shortly before the launch of the iPhone 13, rumors arose that Apple would integrate a satellite feature in its smartphones, for example to be able to make calls in emergency situations where cell phone service is not available. Although this function did not make it into the current iPhone generation, Apple is said to continue working on this satellite technology for iPhones, as reported by 9to5Mac. However, it is still unclear whether the technology will make it into the iPhone 14. However, Apple is testing prototypes that are able to use text messages via satellite reception. The system is called “Stewie” internally.
After the iPhone 12 Mini and 13 Mini, the iPhone 14 should also be the end of the small version. One of the reasons should be the moderate success of the current mini-iPhone. Instead, according to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuoget to see the following four models from the iPhone 14:
No longer a mini, but a max model of the standard version. It could also mean that prices will fall – at least according to Kuo – as reported by 9to5Mac – the iPhone 14 Max will be the cheapest 6.7-inch iPhone in Apple history. He expects it to be under $900. At this point in time, we cannot say what the other prices are going to be like. However, we assume that this could also lower the price of the standard iPhone 14 model compared to the iPhone 13 and make it cheaper to get into the latest generation.
The new features of the iPhone 13 compared to the current 12 models are not so huge that you definitely have to upgrade, as you can in our comparison can read in detail. But with the iPhone 14 generation – if the features come like this – it looks a bit different. So it’s worth the wait if you mainly take a lot of photos and want to benefit from the probably much better camera. And the starting price is set to drop, which will also be an important point for many buyers. Our euphoria would be even greater if 120 Hertz were integrated in all models and the fingerprint sensor in the display as a feature, but that’s probably not to be expected this year.
Overall, Apple is taking a new direction with the iPhone 14 generation and differentiating clearly and more than before between the Standard and Pro models. This also makes it easier to justify the higher price for a Pro device. But Apple’s strategy could actually pay off. Because that’s where the iPhone 14 Max comes in. Even though it shares the same processor and design as the iPhone 13, the 14 Max is a new addition to Apple’s entry-level models and will make the lack of other features much easier to cope with. And it also serves as an entry point into the Pro range, if not with the iPhone 14 then with the 15 or 16.
