According to “Bill of Material” analysis does the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max (approx. 1,450 euros on Amazon) $501 in production. Like a comparable analysis by Formalhaut Techno Solutions (via ITHome) now shows that the production of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 5G costs another 169 US dollars more, namely a total of around 670 US dollars (approx. 634 euros) per piece.
The cheapest Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 5G is available in the US for a list price of $1,799. This puts Samsung’s gross margin at 62.8 percent, while Apple is content with “only” 54.4 percent. However, Samsung already offered attractive pre-order bonuses at launch, since then the prices of the folding flagship have fallen significantly – even on Amazon the device can now be found for 1,259 euros.
This analysis shows that foldable smartphones are still significantly more expensive to produce than their non-foldable counterparts – the large, foldable display, which is installed on top of a more conventional secondary display, and the complex hinge are likely to be the main reasons for the higher costs. Unfortunately, the analysis does not provide any information about the costs of the individual components. However, about half of all components come from South Korea – Samsung apparently relies on the supply chain in its home country instead of relying on the widest possible distribution of suppliers, like Apple, for example, in order to reduce geopolitical risks.
