Apple works with a variety of suppliers to make millions of iPhones, iPads, and other products. The company attaches great importance to diversity in its supply chain in order to be as independent as possible. But in the area of OLED displays, Samsung takes the majority of the orders, and that’s getting loud The Elec don’t change anything for the time being.

Samsung is Apple’s largest OLED supplier

According to The Elec, Samsung Display is expected to supply 70 percent of the OLED panels used by Apple for the iPhone 14 models by the end of the year. The report states that Apple has ordered more than 120 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14. Of these, Samsung is said to deliver 80 million OLED displays to Apple. Apple’s other OLED suppliers include LG Display and BOE, which are expected to ship 20 million and 6 million units, respectively.

Samsung has a clear advantage over its competitors. While LG only supplies LTPS displays for the iPhone 14 and LTPO for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, BOE only takes care of LTPS displays for the regular iPhone 14. Samsung, on the other hand, supplies panels for all iPhone 14 models. The Elec also mentions that of the 80 million units Samsung will ship, at least 60 million will be for the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max models.

Not only does Samsung’s versatile product range make the South Korean company Apple’s first choice, Samsung’s reliability is also better than that of the competition. If Apple had its way, LG would have played a more important role in the supply chain long ago. With a considerable investment of Apple in LG’s production facilities, the supplier should be strengthened and probably also serve as leverage for negotiations with Samsung. But manufacturing issues seem to have kept LG from moving up the supply chain.

Although Apple only recently released the iPhone 14, the company is already working on the next generation of its smartphone, which should also use OLED displays. In addition, according to recent reports, Apple plans to launch a new one iPhone SE in 2024. Besides a new design, it could also come with a 6.1-inch OLED display. Other rumors also indicate that new iPad models with an OLED display will be launched in 2024. Again, Samsung are in high demand and are already planning a new production line.
