For months, rumors have been circulating that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be the first to feature an always-on display (AOD), allowing them to see the time, iOS 16’s new lock screen widgets, and incoming notifications as well , without having to lift or touch the smartphone to wake up the display.
Since some Android smartphones have been offering such a feature for years, the question arises as to why this feature is reserved for the two latest, most expensive smartphones from Apple. The videos embedded below now show that the always-on display would also work on older iPhones up to the iPhone X from 2017, because a software error in the beta version of iOS 16 partially shows the iPhones in the videos the AOD instead of putting the display in standby mode. Apparently, this bug occurs when an iPhone runs out of battery after midnight and then plugs the device into a charger.
Although it would obviously be technically possible, it cannot be assumed that older iPhones will receive this functionality. On the one hand, Apple is likely to use the always-on display as a selling point for the iPhone 14 Pro, on the other hand, the next-gen flagship’s LTPO AMOLED panel can operate in AOD mode at just 1 Hz, reducing the power consumption of the always-on -Display should be significantly lower than in older iPhone models. At least on the iPhone 13 Pro (approx. 1,100 euros on Amazon), whose screen can be operated with at least 10 Hz, it would be desirable if Apple left this decision up to the users instead of making the feature dependent on the purchase of a new smartphone.
