For the first time since the corona pandemic, Apple presented the new iPhone 14 series in a live event at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino. This time, four devices belong to the new iPhone family. Apple has added the two smaller smartphones, the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus, to the flagship models, the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Only the two large models work with the newly introduced A16 Bionic Chip.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

Apple praises it for its high performance and states that it is generations ahead of the competition. The A16 Bionic should have two cores with high performance and four cores with high efficiency. The 6-core CPU, which is manufactured using the 4-nanometer process, is up to 40 percent faster than the competition. It also features a new 16-core neural engine that is said to be capable of nearly 17 trillion operations per second. In the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch Pro Max, the A16 processor is responsible, among other things, for the AI-supported photography of the new 48 MP main camera.

This works with a quad-pixel sensor that combines four pixels into one large quad-pixel. Good photos should also be taken in unfavorable lighting conditions. The camera also offers a 3x optical zoom and an aperture of f/1.9. There are also a number of computer-aided photo functions such as different portrait modes.

While the design of the new iPhone 14 models hasn’t changed much compared to its predecessors, there are details like the narrower bezels and the slightly shrunken selfie camera hole. The displays also offer a higher peak brightness of now 2,000 nits (outdoors) and an always-on function.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

There is little new in the processors of the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus. However, the A15 Bionic chip now works with a 5-core GPU instead of 4 cores as in the iPhone 13. As in the top models, the 12 MP camera is now equipped with a larger sensor and larger pixels and is therefore a bit brighter (aperture f/1.5 and 1.9 µm pixels). The front camera with an aperture of f/1.9 should now enable better photos and videos even in poor lighting conditions. The optimized autofocus has become faster and can focus even faster in low light and for group photos from a greater distance.

The iPhone 14 models now also have automatic accident detection. It is made possible by a dual-core acceleration sensor. It is supplemented by existing components such as the barometer, which detects a change in cabin pressure, the GPS, which provides additional information when the speed changes, or the microphone, which recognizes typical loud noises from serious car accidents. In this way, falls or car accidents are recognized and an emergency call is automatically made. The emergency call via satellite, which is also new, is only available in the USA and Canada.

Apple Watch 8 and Watch SE

The design of the newly introduced Apple Watch 8 and Apple Watch SE models hasn’t changed much either. However, they are equipped with a new processor and new sensors. The dual-core S8 SiP with 64 bits is integrated. Sensors for temperature measurement are also installed. This makes it possible to track the female cycle, for example.

The new Watch OS 9 operating system also provides new functions such as sleep tracking, automatic emergency calls and a power-saving mode that extends battery life to up to 36 hours.

Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra is now available for outdoor fans and extreme athletes. The display of the smart watch measures 49 mm diagonally. At 2,000 nits, it’s also brighter than the displays on the smaller Apple Watch models, and the use of sapphire crystal means it’s said to be more resilient. The Watch Ultra also has an additional button that can be personalized. Three microphones are also integrated in the smartwatch for extreme athletes to improve the sound quality of telephone calls, for example in strong winds and loud ambient noise.

And so that the smartwatch doesn’t run out of juice even on longer tours, the power-saving mode ensures that the battery life can be extended to up to 60 hours. Thanks to the specially developed Wayfinder dial with compass, it should be easier to stay on the right path even in rough terrain. In addition, there is a newly designed compass app via WatchOS 9, which also provides information on latitude, longitude, altitude and inclination as well as a view for orientation with compass waypoints and backtrack.

The Watch Ultra is designed for extreme conditions and should work at temperatures between -20 °C and + 55 °C. It is certified according to MIL-STD-810H.

Airpods Pro 2

The new generation of Apple in-ears should score with better sound quality. The Airpods Pro 2 work with a new processor, the H2 chip. According to the manufacturer, they offer better active noise cancellation and more transparency. In addition, it is now possible to play media and adjust the volume with direct touch controls. Apple has also optimized the battery life. The Airpods Pro should last for up to six hours with active noise cancellation.

The in-ears are in a newly designed charging case that is protected against water and sweat. And with multi-sized eartips, you get a better fit.

Prices and availability

The new iPhone 14 models will be available in different color variants from mid-September 2022. Prices start at 1,299 euros (RRP) for the iPhone 14 Pro with 128 GB of storage. The cheapest iPhone 14 Pro Max with 128 GB of storage costs 1,499 euros (RRP).

The prices for the standard model of the iPhone 14 have also increased. The cheapest device with the 6.1-inch display and 128 GB of memory should cost 999 euros (RRP). The iPhone 14 Plus costs 1,149 euros (RRP).
