, but is considered a major failure for Apple. Apparently, sales fell short of expectations right from the start. According to reports, Apple realized this shortly after the iPhone 12 Mini was presented, but by then the iPhone 13 Mini had been fully developed – so Apple can only go in the opposite direction with the iPhone 14. With the iPhone 14 Max (without Pro), Apple will introduce a maxi model instead of a cheap mini. You can expect an iPhone 14 Max with a nice, large display and battery, but otherwise all the features of the regular iPhone 14. Compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, it could also be a real hit in Germany.

Differences between iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 Max will be part of the base line, as are the current iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini. As is typical for Apple, there will be some restrictions to keep the distance to the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This remains the iPhone flagship in the range and will cost a few hundred more. The new Max model may get a slightly lower-resolution display, and according to reports only the Pro models will get the very latest A16 CPUs. There will also be no Pro Motion and Lidar for the “Golf class”. According to leakers, it is only the Pro models that do without the notch, and Apple will also save on the noble stainless steel frame and the third camera with telephoto focal length.

Does the Pro Max also have advantages?

But that doesn’t have to be a real disadvantage, many of these features are not worth a large surcharge for the user and our last test of the iPhone Pro Max 13 showed a big deficit of the top model.

In our tests, we were actually enthusiastic about the performance of the Max models, but less so about the high surcharge on the already expensive iPhone Pro. This alone could be the reason in stingy Germany that the Pro Max, which costs from 1,249 euros, was not very successful.

But the noble Max had another weakness in the last versions: It was getting heavier and heavier. The XS Max still weighed an acceptable 208 grams, the 11 Pro Max already 227 grams and the current iPhone 13 Pro Max weighs about twice as much as an iPhone 6 at 238 grams. We hope that the slimmed-down iPhone 14 Max will save some weight here .

Why a big screen is an important argument

Apple’s Max models were a hit in the USA and Asia, but in price-conscious Germany many users shy away from Apple’s premium models. After all, it’s not just heavy and big, some Apple’s luxury iPhone may even seem too ostentatious. For many Germans, a smartphone is still a “mobile phone” – which you put in your pocket and always have with you – and of course an iPhone SE is sufficient for that. With a larger screen, however, you have completely new application possibilities for which you might have previously used an additional iPad.

Often the smartphone screen can’t be big enough: Be it to watch Netflix during the train journey, play an exciting game, view and edit video recordings or take a look at a spreadsheet or even add data. Older users should also appreciate the larger font display – with the right zoom setting.

In Asia in particular, large smartphones are taken for granted and not only replace tablets there, but also any other type of computer. This is why the iPhone Mini flopped, especially in this market.

Conclusion

Even if, especially in Germany, many will miss the shape of the iPhone 12/13 Mini – at least until it returns in a future iPhone SE – Apple’s decision to provide the iPhone 14 with a larger iPhone 14 Max is in all likelihood the right one . Large screen, long battery life and a more attractive price compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max could make the iPhone 14 Max a hit. Another advantage for Apple: The average price of the iPhone increases without the price of the basic model having to be increased – new record sales in sight even in difficult times.
