The capacity of renewable electricity generation worldwide reached a new record level of 473 GW in 2023. According to the Irena organization, the agreed goal of tripling by 2030 will probably not be achieved.

According to Irena, this growth in renewable energy for electricity supply is very unevenly distributed across countries. China is the growth engine, with capacity increasing by 63% to 297.6 GW. On the entire African continent, however, only 4.6% more was added to a total capacity of 62 GW. And solar energy is the dominant technology for the expansion.

According to the report Renewable Capacity Statistics 2024 The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) increased the global total capacity for renewable electricity generation by 473 GW to a total of 3,870 GW – a new record. According to Irena, this growth is very unevenly distributed across countries. China is the growth engine, with capacity increasing by 63% to 297.6 GW. On the entire African continent, however, only 4.6% more was added to a total capacity of 62 GW.

According to the Irena report, this imbalance means that the goal of tripling electricity generation from renewable energies by 2030 will be a long way off. This goal was agreed at the last world climate conference, COP28 in Dubai, in December 2023. Francesco La Camera, general director of Irena, estimated the required expansion of 7.2 TW (7200 GW) of renewable energy over the next seven years. “Urgent political measures and a global course correction are needed to successfully overcome structural obstacles and create local value in emerging and developing countries, which are largely left behind in this progress. Given the geographic and technological concentration, there is a risk that the decarbonization gap will widen even further, posing a significant risk to the tripling goal.”

The world record for solar, wind, etc. is not enough for climate protection

Why who grows and how quickly varies. In China, Irena states, the main driver is the increasing competitiveness of solar and wind energy compared to coal and gas power plants. In Europe, increased political orientation and increasing concerns about energy security are the most important drivers for the rapid growth of green electricity.
