The Japanese VW rival Toyota has increased its profit in the first nine months of the current business year despite the global semiconductor bottleneck. However, he slightly lowered his sales forecast for the year as a whole. As the carmaker announced on Wednesday, a net profit of 2.32 trillion yen (17.4 billion euros) was generated in the three quarters to the end of December. This is a huge increase of 57.8 percent compared to the same period last year. For the fiscal year ending Mar 31, however, Toyota expects sales to be slightly lower at 29.5 trillion yen instead of the previously expected 30 trillion yen. However, this would still be an increase of 8.4 percent compared to the previous year.
At the same time, the group, which also includes the small car specialist Daihatsu and the commercial vehicle manufacturer Hino Motors, continues to expect a net profit of 2.49 trillion yen, an increase of 10.9 percent compared to the previous year. Toyota had defended its top position in global sales last calendar year and kept rival Volkswagen at a distance.
More than ten million cars sold
Despite semiconductor supply shortages and other consequences of the corona pandemic, the Group maintained production at a high level in 2021. Toyota sold a total of 10.5 million vehicles. This is an increase of 10.1 percent compared to the previous year. VW, on the other hand, had to accept a decline in sales of 4.5 percent to 8.88 million vehicles in the same year. (dpa/swi)
