The three companies, LG Energy Solution (LG Ensol), SK On, and Samsung SDI, accounted for more than half of the global battery usage (excluding sales in China). LG Ensol ranked first with a market share of 36.5%.

According to SNE Research on the 14th, the three companies, LG Ensol, SK On, and Samsung SDI, accounted for 56.5% of the battery energy of electric vehicles registered in the global market last year.

Last year, the amount of battery energy for electric vehicles registered around the world was 147.8 GWh (gigawatt hour), up 79.0% from the previous year.

Among them, LG Ensol accounted for 54.0GWh, doubling from the previous year. It ranks first in market share after 2020. SK On also doubled its market share to 16.4GWh, recording 11.1% of the market share. Samsung SDI also ranked fifth (8.9%).

The growth of domestic companies is thanks to electric vehicle sales. Sales of Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model 3 (made in China) equipped with LG Ensol battery surged. The sales volume of Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia Niro BEV and EV6, which use SK-on batteries, also surged. Samsung SDI’s batteries are used in the Fiat 500, Ford Kuga PHEV, and Jeep Wrangler PHEV.

On the other hand, the growth rate of Japanese companies such as Panasonic, PEVE and LEJ fell short of the market average. For example, Panasonic’s market share last year was 24%, down 7.3%p from the previous year (31.3%).

Growth of several Chinese companies has been steady. CATL recorded a market share of 12.9%, up 6%p, due to a surge in sales volume of Mercedes-Benz EQA and BMW iX3, including Tesla Model 3 (China-made European export volume).

SNE Research said, “The issue of rising battery material prices and semiconductor supply still remains.
