As the Spanish journalist Sique Rodríguez revealed to “Cadena SER”, the Argentine tied his whereabouts to the commitment of Liverpool star Sadio Mané (29). It was Messi who made representations to the club’s management in the background and demanded that the Senegalese be signed.

The Barça bosses are said to have then also dealt with a Mané obligation. Ultimately, however, an offer did not materialize because the Catalans did not have the financial means available.
Messi moved to Paris on a free transfer, FC Barcelona faltered even more without their superstar. Coach Roland Koeman (58) had to vacate his position at the end of October, the club was kicked out of the Champions League and had to check off the championship in Spain early on.
Barça seems to have caught up a bit at the moment, also because the squad was massively upgraded in winter. Ferran Torres (Manchester City), Adama Traoré (Wolverhampton) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal) came from the Premier League and are strengthening the offensive.
By the way: The fact that Messi is considered a Mané fan is not new. At the end of 2019, when he won his sixth Ballon d’or and the Liverpool star failed to finish in the top three, Messi said: “It’s a shame to see him in fourth place.”
