Apple | For whom a Macbook Pro 16” is still worthwhile – and who should wait | macbook

The Macbook is dead, long live the Macbook: The new Macbook Pro 14 and 16-inch have not yet appeared, but you can only advise against buying an Intel Macbook Pro.

When it comes to computer purchases, there’s a wise rule that we’ve advocated many times in the Mac world: Always buy what you need. If you need a fast and powerful 16-inch Macbook Pro for work or for work, why wait for a new model that nobody has seen before? The device, which was just celebrated as the fastest Macbook in the world, does not automatically become slower as a result.

Despite this, we have the impression that you can’t buy a less recommendable device than a 16-inch MacBook this summer. The reason: The new ARM notebooks have proven to be a real revolution. Macbook Air and Macbook Pro 13-inch make their old Intel predecessors look completely outdated. You are dealing with Apple’s entry-level devices in the notebook line with small screens and few interfaces.

There is hardly any demand for Intel MacBooks anymore

The Intel pre-models in Apple’s refurbished store are almost like that

sold off
. The Macbook Pro 16-inch will certainly also be declassified when the successor appears – and its users will rave about the great features of the new top Macbook. We are sure that the upcoming model will not only be faster, it will offer longer battery life and be significantly quieter. And it’s not just about the hardware. Apple has already announced that the upcoming operating system will only offer some functions under Apple Silicon: from Siri to security functions. So why lock yourself in for the next three or five years of depreciation to an Intel device that’s obsolete when you buy it and rapidly depreciating in value? The release date is unknown, but according to Bloomberg they should come in the summer, so in a few weeks.

We recommend choosing the new Apple silicon model – except:

  • You use it professionally and important applications only run on Windows. However, this is only insufficiently supported on the ARM platform.

  • You want to play the latest PC games, maybe also via boot camp

  • Your old Macbook Pro 15” is defective, you need a replacement and a 13-inch Macbook or Macbook Air is too small or not powerful enough.

  • They are frugal and wait until the 16-inch discontinued model is available at a bargain price.

What will the new model offer?

There are said to be 14 and 16-inch versions with faster M1X chips, HDMI, SD card slot and allegedly also mini-LED displays, so probably like the iPad Pro 12.9 also HDR support. However, the price will probably be based on the Macbook Pro 13-inch with four Thunderbolt interfaces and the Macbook Pro 16-inch – i.e. almost 2000 euros for the 14-inch and 2300 for the 16-inch model.

Are there alternatives?

But not everyone can wait indefinitely. Of course, you can simply buy an Intel MacBook and sell it again when the new model comes out – but you have to reckon with a similarly high loss in value. There is no solution to this dilemma, but in this case we would even suggest an unusual alternative: Do you need a notebook immediately? Then you might consider renting an Intel model for a few months, say at Saturn.
