The repair specialists from ifixit took a closer look at the new MacBook Pro and also took a look at Apple’s official repair instructions for MacBooks.
MacBook exploded view from Apple’s manual
In the video embedded below, not only can you take a look at the inside of the 14-inch version of the new MacBook Pro with M2 processor, but you can also follow how the device can be opened in accordance with the repair instructions published by Apple. Although Apple does not yet provide any corresponding instructions for the new M2 versions of the MacBook Pro, the notebook is largely identical to the previous model and Apple’s repair manual for the MacBook Pro M1 can therefore be used very well for this.
Repair instructions over 162 pages
Apple has also been offering its repair service for iPhone and Mac in Germany for almost two months and has also been providing official repair services since then Repair Guides for Mac and iPhone Repair Guides on. The PDFs provided by Apple are very extensive, for example the German-language repair instructions for the MacBook Pro with a 14-inch screen are a whopping 162 pages long and peppered with warnings, some of which can perhaps be dismissed as standard, but which are quite relevant here and there. For example, the so-called lid angle sensor, which determines whether the notebook is open or closed, can quickly be destroyed if handled improperly:
If the display is not completely closed during the process, the lid angle sensor needs to be replaced. Ensure all system configuration steps are followed to complete the repair.
The bottom line is that Apple’s instructions are detailed enough, according to the technicians, to carry out the repairs listed therein. However, Apple wants to keep the user away from components such as the battery, keyboard, microphone and speakers and classifies them as non-removable parts. This circumstance ensures that the repairability of the new MacBook models does not go beyond 5 out of 10.
