In his new “power on‘ newsletter, Gurman explains that Apple plans to release the new MacBook Pro models “later this fall”. However, as usual, there is a possibility that the timeframe will shift due to supply chain disruptions or other factors. According to the analyst, the mass production of notebooks will continue Ming Chi Kuo begin in the fourth quarter.

While some reports have suggested that the M2 Pro and M2 Max could be Apple’s first 3nm chips, it is increasingly becoming apparent that the chips will continue to be manufactured using the 5nm manufacturing process.

The situation is a bit unclear at the moment. According to various reports, TSMC is planning to start producing 3nm chips for Apple in the near future. It is therefore not really clear whether these will still be used in 2022. What is certain is that according to Gurman, Apple will announce new M2-based MacBook Pro models in October. Even if there won’t be 3nm chips, there are still said to be noticeable performance improvements over the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips – largely thanks to TSMC’s “more advanced 5nm process N5P” which would be used in this case. Like the standard M2 chip, the M2 Pro and M2 Max will likely have more GPU cores and RAM compared to their M1 counterparts.

No major design changes are expected for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, which is not surprising as the notebooks launched in October 2021 with an all-new design. The new design included the return of ports like MagSafe and HDMI, while adding a notch on the display for an improved 1080p camera and narrower bezels.

There are also rumors that a new Mac mini with an M2 Pro chip could be released this year, as well as a new Mac Pro tower with “M2 Ultra” and “M2 Extreme” chips.
