Although both horizontal and vertical folding screen mobile phones are folding screens, the two product forms represent two different product directions-horizontal flipping aims to “expand”, vertical flipping aims to “shrink”; also Because of the different forms, manufacturers tend to lean towards the business direction of folding screen phones with horizontal folding screens, while phones with vertical folding screens often focus on beauty.
There are three mobile phone series with vertical folding screens on the market: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, Moto’s new Rarz, and the protagonist of this article, the Huawei P50 Pocket. They all go the same way of beauty-Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 Take the young and fashionable style, Moto Rarz 5G takes the cold and light style, while Huawei’s P50 Pocket this time takes the light and luxurious style.
Huawei provides P50 Pocket with obsidian black, crystal diamond white, and a customized version of gilt gold. The crystal diamond white surface in the hand has criss-cross diamond-shaped embossed patterns, which is easy to think of the various colors on a luxury brand. This kind of logo printing, the important thing is that its texture is not only visible, but also tangible.
Unfolding the Huawei P50 Pocket is a 6.9-inch internal screen. The size is bigger than most flagship phones on the market. The resolution is 2790 × 1188, which belongs to the 1080p+ level, and the maximum display refresh rate is 120Hz.
The pixel structure of this flexible OLED photographed under a microscope is as follows, which is basically determined to be a panel from BOE (but there is also news that there is a Visionox panel, to be confirmed).
Regarding the display quality of this internal screen, you may wish to review the objective data measured by WHYLAB laboratory professional instruments.
The first is the brightness. The maximum manual brightness measured under the instrument is 574.8nits, and the external strong light can excite 734.22nits, which is the performance of today’s flagship screen.
“Standard” and “Vivid” are the two display modes that Huawei provides for the P50 Pocket. The former “Standard” is the default mode, the laboratory measured 103.36% sRGB color gamut coverage, and the latter’s “Vivid” mode measured 91.60%. P3 color gamut coverage.
In terms of color accuracy, continue to look at the “124-color average ΔE2000 value” that reflects the color shift. The lower the value, the less the color shift, and the more accurate the corresponding colors. The “standard” mode that pursues color accuracy corresponds to sRGB colors. The ΔE2000 value of the gamut is 1.79, which is good; while the “Vivid” mode corresponds to the P3 color gamut with a value of 4.34, the color standard can only be called a pass, but it is also in line with the mode positioning of pursuing brilliant colors.
The outer screen of the P50 Pocket echoes the camera, which is actually just a small circular functional screen. The pixel structure of this OLED taken under the microscope is as above, which is a bit different from the inner screen. Don’t expect a 1.04 inch 340 × 340 resolution circular screen to achieve too many functions. Now its main purpose is to display the time, check notifications, weather, control music, and take selfies, as well as special sun protection detection.
On the camera module next to the external screen, there is a very special fill light and a special camera. Huawei refers to it as a “hyperspectral fill light”, which actually includes an ultraviolet fill light. An ultra-wide-spectrum (ultraviolet) camera can monitor whether the sunscreen on your face is evenly applied and whether it can withstand ultraviolet rays-but it should be noted that this function itself emits a certain amount of ultraviolet rays, so I personally recommend it. Use the sun protection function only after preparing for sun protection.

Back to the inner screen, which is the main screen of the P50 Pocket, the surface uses a nano-optical film. The actual look and feel is still good, but the texture is relatively soft. In terms of creases, compared to the recently launched Find N and its own Mate X2, it is indeed more obvious. After all, the hinge part of such a small body cannot be made too large. The actual crease is slightly deeper but the area is small. Compared with the U-shaped hinge of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3, although the folding area of its water drop hinge is larger, the crease is much shallower.
For some well-known reasons, this year’s Huawei started to switch to Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC. Even if it uses the annual flagship Snapdragon 888 platform, it can only be connected to the 4G network.
Huawei P50 Pocket also uses the 4G version of the Snapdragon 888 platform chip, and has not yet used the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 platform.
So what about the gaming performance of Snapdragon 888 on Huawei P50 Pocket? This time we chose three games, “Honor of Kings”, “Peace Elite”, and “Original God” to find out. Among them, Peace Elite tested two frame rate modes of 60fps and 90fps respectively. The other two games are all in 60fps mode. And P50 Pocket has turned on “Performance Mode”.
From the shallower to the deeper, let’s look at “Honor of Kings” first. The average frame rate is 59.69fps, basically running at 60fps at full frame rate. The frame rate change trend graph is basically flat, but three screen jitters are found.
Looking at “Peace Elite”, the performance is good in 60fps frame rate mode, with an average frame rate of 58.91fps. The curve of the frame rate change trend graph is also very flat, and there is no screen jitter; however, the performance of 90fps mode is not stable. 90fps and 40fps repeated horizontal jumps, the average frame rate was 58.1fps, and there were 15 jitters (14 severe jitters).
In view of the fact that the 90fps “Peace Elite” jitters more times, we specifically tried to turn off the “Performance Mode” of the phone and run it again. The final picture jitters less frequently, but the average frame rate is also reduced a lot. The entire game process is twofold. Step jump, from 90fps to 60fps, and then to 40fps.
Finally, look at the “Yuan Shen”, you can see that the stability of the P50 Pocket is not very good, the average frame rate is 39.4fps, and the screen jitter is also serious.
Perhaps it’s because Huawei is still a novice in front of the Snapdragon chip, especially when it comes to this year’s Snapdragon 888 Fire Dragon SoC, it needs to accumulate more experience in performance tuning, so that the P50 Pocket can better play the Snapdragon 888’s performance. Performance, give Huawei some more time.
In addition to the aforementioned “32-megapixel ultra-wide-spectrum camera”, the P50 Pocket is equipped with a 40-megapixel wide-angle main camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.
Among them, the main camera is an IMX766 sensor, and the ultra-wide-angle end is an IMX688 sensor, and the ultra-wide-angle end is absent. And its actual performance basically continues Huawei’s previous style, you can feel it directly from the proofs of the main camera below, and I don’t need to spend too much time here.
The following is a sample taken at the ultra-wide-angle end of the Huawei P50 Pocket.
Huawei equipped the P50 Pocket with a 4000mAh battery, which is also equipped with a maximum 40W fast charge. The ordinary (non-rechargeable package) version is not equipped with a charger at the factory. If you want to achieve a 40W fast charge, you have to buy a charger yourself (the official price is 159 yuan) ).
The 4000mAh battery is not considered mainstream for today’s flagship phones, but compared to the 3300mAh of Samsung next door, or even the Moto Razr 5G’s 2845mAh, the P50 Pocket is much more generous-you should know that this kind of vertical folding screen phone needs Making room for mechanical structures such as hinges and hinges has already squeezed the originally stretched internal space. Therefore, Huawei P50 Pocket can have a 4000mAh capacity. There is indeed a lot of conscience.
Can the Snapdragon 888 platform + 4000mAh battery satisfy its appetite for a day? Follow the routine of the “Five-hour battery life test” standard of our WHYLAB laboratory. The test items in a unified environment include Weibo, WeChat chat, online music, online long video (station B), short video, e-book, game, Taking photos, online shopping, and talking, each lasts half an hour, totaling 5 hours, compressing and simulating the amount of power loss caused by our daily use.
The remaining power of the P50 Pocket is 35% in one round-this result is quite satisfactory for a 4000mAh battery, not good but sufficient.
We also monitored the temperature of the P50 Pocket during the five-hour battery life test. The highest temperature on the front and back was recorded during the recording process. The front 44.5℃ is located at the upper right corner of the screen, and the back 42.6℃ is near the camera module. There is still room for improvement with P50 Pocket.
And standby has always been Huawei’s strengths-turn off the screen when fully charged at night, turn on the mobile network of the P50 Pocket, and keep the basic app running in the background for 8 hours to simulate the power consumption during sleep at night to spy on it. Standby performance-After a test run, the machine finally has a remaining power of 99%. It can be seen that Huawei’s night background management capabilities in the P50 Pocket system are still in place.
After watching battery life and standby, let’s take a look at its charging performance.
With Huawei’s official 40W super charger, a complete charge (from zero to one hundred) takes 61 minutes-23% in 10 minutes and 65% in half an hour. At this stage, it is a compact vertical folding screen mobile phone. The limited internal space is basically unable to meet the addition of higher power charging, which can basically meet the daily use.
Starting at 8988 yuan, as a vertical folding screen phone, Huawei’s debut P50 Pocket may be the most mature one on the market today; as a flagship phone, it does still have shortcomings, but those who choose it may not be overwhelmed. Caring about its shortcomings, on the contrary, its uniqueness is more moving; if you have a Huawei P5 Pocket on hand, would you choose to try it? Or will you choose common ones?Return to Sohu to see more
