A completely revised version of the popular camera app Hydra (App Store link) appeared. The Creaceed development team has re-released the application in version 2 on the App Store. If you want to unlock the full version with all recording modes and features, you can book it after a test phase for a one-time fee of EUR 14.99 or via a subscription model with costs of EUR 0.99/month or EUR 5.99/year. Hydra 2 is 58 MB, requires iOS or iPadOS 14.3 or later, and at least an iPhone 6s. An iPhone XR/XS or newer is required for neural processing with Apple’s Neural Engine. Hydra 2 can also be used in German.

There are some exciting improvements in the new Hydra 2 app, including a new and AI-driven RAW fusion, HDR with 20+ stops for better highlights and shadows, detail enhancement and noise reduction in low light, macro shots, 6/8 -x digital zoom and up to 110 megapixel resolution with iPhone’s built-in 12 megapixel sensors.

In the now released version 2.2 of Hydra, the Creaceed development team has also launched support for the new iPhone 14 Pro smartphones and improvements for iOS 16. These are the innovations:

  • iPhone 14 Pro Quad-Pixel sensor support in Normal mode: Hydra currently exposes the 48MP sensor when shooting in Normal mode. Both ProRAW (for editing) and JPEG/HEIC (high speed) can be used.
  • Hydra’s photo editor is updated so that you can edit in full 48MP resolution and save the result.
  • When shooting with the quad-pixel sensor, Hydra offers an intermediate format of 27 MP (photo reduction option) to enable higher photo resolution with a smaller file size.

It is important to note that the Hydra AI modes currently do not support the new 48MP sensor, as the full-resolution RAW format is not offered to third-party developers. “Stay tuned in as we hope to be able to do more as soon as we can,” the Hydra team said on the matter. The update also fixed a UI-related bug on iOS 16. The update to version 2.2 is now available to all Hydra users free of charge in the German App Store.
