Only the two more expensive models have the new A16, while Apple continues to equip the cheaper smartphones with a (albeit slightly improved) A15. In addition, the Pro versions differ from their standard siblings with some new features reserved for them, such as the “Dynamic Island” and the always-on display. There are also differences in the basic design of the inner workings – with consequences for repairability.

iPhone 14 Pro Max teardown
As is well known, Apple made a significant change to the iPhone 14: The device can be opened from the back, so the glass back can be replaced individually (see ). This also makes other repairs easier because the logic board, for example, can be replaced without having to remove the display. iFixit therefore voted the iPhone 14 the “most repair-friendly iPhone in years” (see ). Now the teardown experts also took apart the iPhone 14 Pro Max. It turned out that Apple has not followed the path chosen for the cheaper device with the new top model.

Inside almost identical to the iPhone 13 Pro Max
The housing and inner workings of the iPhone 14 Pro Max are almost identical to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Unlike the iPhone 14, the device, which is available from 1,449 euros, cannot be opened from the back. As with the iPhone 13 Pro Max and previous smartphone generations from Cupertino, service technicians always have to remove the display to access the components. iFixit therefore rates the repairability of the iPhone 14 Pro Max as that of its predecessor with 6 out of 10 points, the iPhone 14 scored 7 out of 10 points.

US iPhones: Space for the SIM card slot remains empty

Among other things, teardown also provides clarity on the question of how Apple uses the space available in the US models due to the omission of the SIM card slot. The simple answer is: not at all. Except for a non-functioning piece of plastic, the corresponding spot simply remains empty. This is very untypical for Apple, states iFixit. However, the repair experts assume that the Californian group will equip the volume that has been freed up with components for the iPhone 15 next year. They also expect the inner workings of Pro and non-Pro models to be standardized in the coming year, with the latter likely to receive the architecture of the current iPhone 14.
