The detection of an unusual heartbeat was followed by the fall detection including an automatic emergency call function. At the September event, Apple presented the next step, “Crash Detection”, i.e. accident detection, to intervene in the event of serious car accidents. Apple has already shown in a video how the feature works, which is not just limited to the new Apple Watch models. The iPhone 14 also has the corresponding sensors. Now a YouTuber has found out with a remote-controlled, wreck-ready car whether the function really works reliably.

Elaborate algorithms and sensor recognition
Just as with fall detection, the system must ensure that an alarm is not triggered immediately in the event of random vibrations. Apple emphasized how extensive the development was designed to cover all types of accidents. In the first test run, the car was only involved in a very minor accident – and in fact the system did not immediately raise the alarm. Things got a little more difficult in the second run, where a human driver would certainly be in danger of seriously injuring himself.

What happens after a crash
After the accident, a few seconds passed before the iPhone was actually sure that it had crashed, which may have caused injuries. “It looks like you’re involved in an accident,” says the message – then a countdown begins, which triggers the SOS function if there is no interaction. A third attempt confirmed the result, because the iPhone had again responded reliably and began to initiate emergency measures. This is now the first practical test of the crash detection – which obviously works as promised by Apple.
