What makes the iPhone 14 different from its predecessor, the iPhone 13? Unfortunately only a little. The feature list is quite short, as Apple has only given its new smartphone a small update. New additions include an improved main and selfie camera, automatic accident detection, more RAM, two housing colors and improved repairability. The really exciting innovations of the iPhone 14 series such as the always-on display, the 48 MP camera and the Dynamic Island are only available on the Pro models iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Anyone who already owns an iPhone 13 should feel little motivation to switch to the iPhone 14 due to the many similarities. In addition, Apple has set the starting price 100 euros higher. The new Apple smartphone costs around 1000 euros in the smallest storage variant with 128 GB – the iPhone 13 was still 900 euros. Because the iPhone 13 Pro is now in a similar price range, it is a better alternative to the iPhone 14 for those willing to buy. Advantages include the additional telephoto camera and the adaptive 120 Hz display. The standard iPhone, on the other hand, will only have a 60 Hz panel in 2022.
Main camera from the iPhone 13 Pro
The possibly extensive update that Apple has given the iPhone 14 revolves around the camera. The 12MP main camera is now the same as the iPhone 13 Pro. This also increases the sensor size from 1.7 to 1.9 µm and the light intensity improves from f/1.6 to f/1.5. In the test, this is particularly noticeable in night shots. Under low light conditions, the iPhone 14 takes significantly better photos than its predecessor and shows significantly more details and richer colors in darker areas of the image. The selfie camera has also been improved, which now has an autofocus and thus takes sharper pictures, especially at close range.

My fascination with computers started with the C64. Since then, everything I can get my hands on in terms of hardware has been put through its paces. From the C64 to the Amiga 500 and the first PC with an 8088 CPU, the list of projects finally got longer and longer. I have been making my hobby my job for more than 20 years and have been active in the mobile sector at Notebookcheck since 2012. Before that, I worked as a hardware editor for IDG Media (tecChannel.de) and VNU Business Publications (PC Professional), among others.
