“SIM Not Supported” probably not a hardware problem
The Cupertino-based company is investigating the issue and has MacRumors according to an internal company memorandum. All current iPhone models are affected – i.e. iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. These devices may display the error message “SIM Not Supported” even with a supported and fully intact SIM card. According to the iOS message, the operating system of the respective iPhone may also freeze.
According to the memorandum, the company is looking for clues. A hardware problem can therefore be ruled out. Apple will most likely address the bug with a future software update. Users should therefore pay attention to appropriate software updates and keep the iOS version of their iPhone up to date.
Apple advises affected iPhone examination in the Apple Store
If the iPhone hangs on the software side as part of the error message, Apple says users should first wait a few minutes and see whether the iDevice responds to inputs again. If the iPhone is still frozen, the company doesn’t recommend doing a factory restore. Instead, users should take their iPhone to an Apple Retail Store or Authorized Reseller/Repair Service Provider for assistance.
It remains to be seen whether the final version of iOS 16.1 will provide a software solution to the SIM problem. Previous updates for iOS 16 already fixed bugs related to not working iPhone activations and camera vibrations.
