- Our conclusion: The iPhone 14 is slightly ahead – but if you want a real upgrade, you have to go for one of the Pro models.
From the outside, the iPhone 13 and the brand new iPhone 14 look almost the same. It used to be different – back then, Apple smartphones could be distinguished quite well by their design. For example, you could tell the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 apart based on the arrangement of the cameras. Super fans may still recognize the iPhone 14 by its lighter blue or the more intense red tone, but the difference on the inside is much more important. As with every new iPhone generation, the question arises: is it worth buying the latest model? We compared the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.

iPhone 13 versus iPhone 14: are there differences in design?
Both iPhone models have a 6.1-inch display with OLED technology and are in an angular aluminum housing with a glass back. The only differences are in the colors: The blue is stronger on the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 comes in a more intense red and a new light violet variant. In addition, the camera block on the back of the iPhone 14 is slightly larger. Overall, both smartphones convince with a handy design.
But if you don’t just focus on the standard model, there is still a design change to note. The iPhone 14 generation no longer has a mini model. Instead, you can get the iPhone 14 Plus, which comes with the same 6.7-inch screen as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. This model is therefore a cheaper option (compared to the Pro models) for customers who prefer a larger smartphone.
Which display is better?
There are no differences between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14 in terms of the display either. Both generations have an excellent OLED display, their screen brightness is between 833 candelas per square meter for normal content and almost 1100 candelas for HDR, and the sharpness is also convincing at a good 460 ppi. The only drawback: the refresh rate is still stuck at the outdated setting of 60 Hertz.
It is therefore also worth taking a look at the other variants of the iPhone 14 series on the front of the display. In the Pro models, for example, the notch, which is unpopular with many users, was replaced with the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped recess on the display. This offers additional functions such as the display of notifications, timers or directions. Also new on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max: the always-on display, which constantly displays information such as the time and date.
Which iPhone has the more powerful processor?
Surprise! We can’t report any major differences in the processor either. Both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 are powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic processor. After all: If you look at the processors in detail, there are at least small changes to be observed. The iPhone 14 has the better A15 variant, which was previously reserved for the iPhone 13 Pro. That means it has one more core available for graphics performance. This actually makes the iPhone 14 a little faster than the iPhone 13.
However, the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max have been given a new chip: the A16 Bionic chip works in both. This should offer up to 28 percent better performance than its predecessor.
The cameras in comparison – can the iPhone 13 keep up with the iPhone 14?
The camera equipment of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 is also the same on paper: both have two 12-megapixel cameras on the back, a main camera and an ultra-wide-angle camera. There is a 12-megapixel camera at the front. For those who take a lot of selfies, the iPhone 14 has an important innovation: the front camera now has an autofocus. This is particularly noticeable with photos in portrait mode, where the focus point can now be set manually on the background. Another advantage of the iPhone 14: In action mode, you can now film much more stable videos – even with strong movements, and cinema mode is now also available in 4K instead of just Full HD. So when it comes to cameras, the new iPhone has the edge.
According to Apple, the camera performance of the iPhone 14 generation is even two to three times better than that of the iPhone 13. Photonic Engine is the magic keyword here, because it ensures brighter colors and makes more details visible in dark areas. And the Pro models also get further upgrades for the camera. Both now have a 48 megapixel camera system, which means that your photos are still sharp even with a high zoom.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 in comparison: which smartphone has the better battery?
The improved A15 Bionic Chip in the iPhone 14 ensures that you can get more performance out of every battery charge. According to Apple, the iPhone 14 lasts about 20 hours of continuous use when playing videos – an hour longer than the iPhone 13.
In this area, too, the iPhone 14 Plus and the iPhone 14 Pro Max impress with their long-lasting batteries. The Plus should last up to 26 hours, while the Pro Max should even last 29 hours during video playback.
Conclusion: iPhone 13 or iPhone 14?
If you look at the individual categories in which we compared the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, it quickly becomes clear that the smartphones are extremely similar. Both models have a high-quality design, a good OLED screen and the same operating system. When it comes to the camera and battery, the iPhone 14 has a slight edge, but does that justify the significantly higher price? There’s nothing wrong with buying the iPhone 14, of course, but we don’t think it’s worth upgrading if you already own an iPhone 13. And if you are not prepared to spend at least 999.00 euros for a new smartphone, but still want a top Apple smartphone, you are guaranteed to be happy with the iPhone 13.
For a significant upgrade, you would have to go for the iPhone 14 Pro models, as they offer some new functions. And if you just want a bigger smartphone but can do without pro features like the always-on display and 48-megapixel camera, the iPhone 14 Plus is a good alternative.
